Group Understanding of the ICT Integration Project

When we began this project we realised we were required to make an ICT project that would use ICT to engage children in early childhood education. We believe that this project required activities that were fun an allowed children to learn, without them becoming bored or unengaged. ICT is something that this generation of kids use day to day. We need to capture that and teach in a way that will engage students; ICT is one way of doing that. We have made our lessons fun but challenging and that will engage the students in something they love. This topic could quite easily be taught from books, however by applying ICT it can make the topic fun and easier for students to learn.

Our Project Management Plan

Delegation of duties;

1. Aimee- Lesson two and lesson four for teachers page, introduction page, task page, resource page, project management plan, explanation and justification of the ICT resources we used, the statement on how our ICT Integration Project is centred on a social constructivist classroom, and the inspiration map.

2.
Caitlin- lesson one and lesson three for the teachers page, evaluation page-rubric and other additions to teacher page. Putting the wiki page together.

Our ICT Resources
We tried to incorporate as many ICT’s as we could into our lessons. We also varied the ICT’s we chose so that they were all different and helped students not only in their learning and development of understandings, but also worked on their computer skills. We chose the following ICT’s for this project;

1. The Learning Federation- because it is such an extensive collection of resources for teachers and students, every teacher should become a member of this federation in order to gain access to all of the resources available. It is very interactive for the children and they learn while having fun and using a computer.

2. You tube- because of the great videos teachers can access to provide a different way of learning for the children.

3. Interactive Whiteboard- is a great interactive way for students to learn as a class or individually, and there is so much that teachers can do with this resource!

4. Powerpoint- because it is a simple way for children to present their information in a visually appealing way- caters for different types of learners.

5. Talking Tins- is a very different way for children to present information, it is interesting for the students, and caters for the visually impaired students also- very effective for research assignments.

6. Microsoft word- is an easy to use program that students can use to process and present information.

Social Constructivism

Our ICT Integration Project is centred on a social constructivist approach. Jody Brewer and C.J. Daane state in their article “Translating constructivist theory into practice in primary-grade mathematics”, that constructivism means “knowledge that is not passively received… knowledge that is actively built up by the cognizing subject”. Caitlin and I believe that we have followed this principle in our ICT project. We agree with constructivist teachers that knowledge needs to be built up, not just received- from teacher to student; it is the process that is important, knowledge must be constructed by the students with the aid of the teacher.

We have catered for this in our lessons, in that we have some teacher-directed activities, but also some individual, student- centred activities such as independent research and also group work, as students can share their knowledge, and build on their existing knowledge from other students.

Social constructivism is very important in schools and the theory of constructivist teaching should be, in some way, included in all teachers’ programs. We think that we have successfully incorporated constructivist teaching into our ICT Integration Project.
